The OSG 1410104108 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in through-hole applications. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, it produces M6x1.00 metric coarse threads using a chipless forming action rather than cutting, which results in stronger thread forms and eliminates chip evacuation concerns. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and heat tolerance. With a plug chamfer of 4 to 4.5 threads, it is suited for starting in through-hole work where the tap can advance freely. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and production line technicians are the primary installers of this tool.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations on a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It is typically deployed in production machining environments, job shops, and maintenance operations where metric fastener holes are being formed in finished or semi-finished components. The 6H class of fit and D8 thread limit make it appropriate for standard metric fastener assemblies requiring close tolerance threads.
Designed for through-hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Fits standard tap holders and quick-change tapping chucks sized for a 6.48 mm (0.255 inch) shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — consult the tap manufacturer drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter, as it differs from a standard cut-tap drill size. Secure the tap in a floating or tension-compression tapping holder to prevent thread distortion and tap breakage. Use a recommended tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate to the workpiece material; forming operations generate significant friction, particularly in stainless and alloy steel. Ensure the machine spindle speed and feed rate are matched to the tap's specifications for the material being tapped.
