The OSG 1410103301 is a thread forming tap designed for M5x0.80 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, this forming tap displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, the 1410103301 handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum. It carries a D7 thread limit and a 6H class of fit, making it suitable for precision threaded assemblies where dimensional accuracy is required. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials, including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It fits into the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered for cold-form tapping where chip evacuation is a concern or where thread strength needs to exceed what a cut thread can deliver. Typical use cases include CNC machining centers, drill press setups, and manual tapping where right-hand metric threads are required in production or maintenance environments.

Thread forming taps require the correct forming tap drill size, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill for the same thread designation — consult a forming tap drill chart before drilling the pilot hole. Use a dedicated tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material to reduce torque and extend tool life. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole before applying torque. Reverse the tap periodically if tapping by hand to relieve built-up stress in the shank.
