The OSG 1410103201 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile and machinable metals without cutting. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap operates in the HY-PRO NRT series and carries a D4 thread limit with a 4H class of fit. The modified bottoming chamfer - 2 to 2.5 threads - allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 2.374 inches (60.30 mm) with a tapping depth of 0.874 inches (22.20 mm). Machinists and tool and die technicians install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where chip-free thread forming is required.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The cold-forming process displaces material rather than removing it, which produces stronger threads and eliminates chip evacuation concerns in blind-hole applications. It is commonly used in production environments where thread quality and tool life consistency are critical.

Thread forming taps must be used with the correct tapping lubricant or cutting fluid recommended for the workpiece material - this is especially important when working with stainless steel or hardened alloys. Ensure the tap holder provides the correct axial float to prevent tap binding. Set spindle speed according to the workpiece material and tap diameter; excessive speed in hard materials will shorten tool life. Always confirm proper hole diameter before tapping, as thread forming requires a specific pilot hole size larger than a standard cut-tap pilot to achieve the correct class of fit.
