The OSG 1410103008 is a thread forming tap designed for bottoming applications in blind holes, offered under the HY-PRO NRT series. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to evacuate. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, carbon steel, die steel, and aluminum. The M5x0.80 metric coarse thread profile and bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads allow threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.3622 inches (60.30 mm) with a thread length of 0.3937 inches (10.00 mm) and a tapping depth of 0.8740 inches (22.20 mm).
This tap is suited for production and maintenance machining environments where consistent, high-strength internal threads are required in blind hole configurations. It is appropriate for use on CNC machining centers, manual mills, and drill presses equipped with a tapping head or rigid tapping capability. The D4 thread limit and 4H class of fit make it a reliable choice for standard metric fastener fitment across general metalworking, tool and die, and precision fabrication applications where chip-free threading is required.
Designed for use in blind hole threading of alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring M5x0.80 metric coarse internal threads. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steels and non-ferrous materials per ISO designations.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material — insufficient lubrication is the leading cause of premature tap failure. Ensure the tap holder provides rigid alignment to avoid bell-mouthing or thread distortion. Because this is a forming rather than cutting tap, the correct pilot hole diameter is critical and will be slightly larger than the pilot hole used for a cutting tap of the same thread size — consult a thread forming tap drill chart for the proper drill size. Power down and secure the workpiece fully before beginning tapping operations.
