The OSG 1410102401 is a thread forming tap designed for M4x0.70 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, delivering elevated heat resistance and improved lubricity during tapping operations. With a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 thread pitches, it threads close to the bottom of blind holes where a standard or plug chamfer cannot reach. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series and carries a 4H class of fit with a D4 thread limit.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It is a tool-room and production staple for machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working with metric fastener applications. The bottoming geometry makes it especially practical for fixtures, mold components, and assemblies where full thread depth in a shallow blind hole is required.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability across these material families. No coolant-through feature; external cutting fluid or tapping compound is recommended.
Thread forming taps require proper hole preparation with a forming tap drill size, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill — consult an M4x0.70 thread forming drill chart before drilling. Use a suitable tapping fluid or paste lubricant; dry forming will accelerate tap wear and can cause galling in stainless or harder steels. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping, and ensure the tap is held perpendicular to the hole face. This tap is intended for use by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with metric thread forming processes.
