The OSG 1410101401 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal metric threads without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it handles demanding materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, carbon steel, die steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer with 1 to 1.5 thread lead allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes, making it well suited for tight-tolerance applications. The 4H class of fit and D3 thread limit ensure consistent, accurate thread geometry in production and repair work. This tap is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, engineered for reliable forming performance in ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This tap is used in blind hole threading applications across manufacturing, maintenance, and repair environments. It is appropriate for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where a metric M3x0.50 Metric Coarse internal thread is required. Typical users include machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working with alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum components. The steam oxide coating helps reduce friction and improve tap life in these materials. The bottoming chamfer is specifically chosen when thread depth must extend as close as possible to the base of a blind hole.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring an M3x0.50 Metric Coarse internal thread. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps should be installed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with proper tap speeds and feeds for the specific workpiece material. Power down and de-energize any machine spindle before mounting or removing the tap from the holder. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil recommended for the workpiece material to maximize tap life. Do not use a thread forming tap in pre-drilled holes sized for cut taps, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole diameter to achieve the correct class of fit.
