The OSG 1405011908 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-form threading in blind holes. Unlike cutting taps, this forming tap displaces material rather than cutting chips, producing stronger threads with better surface finish. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) for uniform grain structure and toughness, it carries a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating that reduces friction and extends tool life in demanding materials. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. This tap is used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in precision threading applications.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a wide range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is engineered for production environments where thread quality and tool longevity are critical. Its H4 thread limit provides consistent fit class across high-volume runs. Typical applications include automotive, aerospace, and general machining where formed threads in ductile metals are required. No coolant-through capability; standard flood or tap-magic lubrication applies.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Suitable for use with standard 3/8-24 UNF tap holders and tapping heads accepting a 0.3810-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require proper lubrication - use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material; this tap does not have coolant-through capability. Ensure the tap is driven at the correct spindle speed and feed rate for the material and hole diameter to avoid tool breakage. Secure the workpiece firmly and verify hole depth is sufficient for the required thread length plus tap relief before starting. This tool should be installed and operated by qualified machinists familiar with tapping procedures and toolholder specifications.
