The OSG 1405010708 is a thread forming tap from the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. Running at 3/8-16 UNC with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 thread pitches, it is suited for blind hole threading where full thread depth close to the bottom of the hole is required. Manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) and finished with a TiCN coating, it delivers consistent performance in demanding production environments. The H8 thread limit ensures accurate fit in standard tolerance applications. Machinists and toolroom technicians use this tap in CNC and manual tapping operations across a wide range of workpiece materials.
This tap is built for blind hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Its thread-forming action displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chip removal required. This makes it well suited for automated tapping cycles on CNC machining centers as well as manual tapping applications. The bottoming chamfer allows threads to be formed very close to the bottom of a blind hole, maximizing usable thread depth in tight clearance designs.
Designed for use in blind hole applications across alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N confirm suitability for these material groups per ISO classification.
Installation and use of this tap should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid requirements for the workpiece material. Always ensure the tapping spindle and workpiece are properly aligned before engagement to prevent tap breakage. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material; thread-forming taps typically require higher torque than cutting taps, so verify machine spindle torque capacity before use. Do not exceed the recommended tapping depth for the given drill hole preparation.
