The OSG 1405009008 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. It produces a 5/16-18 UNC right-hand thread using a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it suitable for shallow blind holes where thread engagement close to the bottom is required. Constructed from powdered metal high-speed steel and coated with TiCN, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and surface hardness over standard HSS options. Overall length is 2.719 inches with a shank diameter of 0.318 inches and a tapping depth of 1.126 inches. Thread limit is H6. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and skilled maintenance mechanics install this tap in production and repair settings.
This tap is engineered for blind hole threading applications across a broad range of metallic workpiece materials. It is suited for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is a cold-forming design, meaning it displaces rather than cuts material, which results in stronger thread forms and eliminates chip buildup in the hole. This makes it especially useful in automated tapping operations and CNC machining centers where chip evacuation is a concern.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N apply. Intended for use in standard 5/16-18 UNC tapping applications in machining, fabrication, and maintenance operations.
Thread forming taps require a forming tap drill size, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill - consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct hole preparation before use. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to reduce forming torque and extend tap life. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the drilled hole to prevent tap breakage. Do not use this tap as a cut tap; it is designed exclusively for cold-forming operations.
