The OSG 1405006908 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for bottoming applications in blind hole threading. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips. This tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and carries a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and lubricity. It is sized for 1/4-20 UNC threads with a right-hand thread direction and an H6 thread limit. The overall length is 2.5 inches, with a thread length of 0.5945 inches and a tapping depth of 0.9960 inches. It is installed by machinists and maintenance professionals working with tapping machines, CNC machining centers, or hand tap holders.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading across a broad range of workpiece materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is engineered for demanding production and toolroom environments where thread quality and tool life are critical. It is a strong fit for job shops, maintenance operations, and manufacturing facilities working across mixed material schedules.
Designed for use in 1/4-20 UNC blind hole applications across alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size — consult a thread forming tap drill chart before drilling. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to prevent galling and extend tool life. Secure the tap in a rigid, synchronous holder or tapping attachment to avoid tap breakage. Ensure the workpiece is firmly fixtured before starting.
