The OSG 1405005808 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for blind hole threading in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. It cuts no chips - instead, it cold-forms threads by displacing material, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish than cut taps. The tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and carries a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and lubricity. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.4921-inch thread length, it is sized for 10-32 UNF right-hand threads with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 thread pitches. Class of fit is 2B, thread limit H5. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this tap in drill press, CNC, or tapping arm operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer geometry allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it the correct choice when full-depth thread engagement is required in tight bore depths. It is commonly used in precision machining, fixture fabrication, and production tapping operations where thread quality and tool life are critical. The EXOTAP VP-NRT designation indicates OSG formless-tap geometry optimized for ductile and semi-ductile materials.
Designed for blind hole threading applications in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces requiring a 10-32 UNF Class 2B thread form.
This tap is installed by machinists using a tapping head, CNC machining center, or manual tapping arm - ensure the spindle is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface before engagement. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and use an appropriate thread forming lubricant or cutting fluid compatible with the workpiece material. Because this is a forming tap, the correct pilot hole diameter is larger than for a cut tap - verify the recommended forming tap drill size for 10-32 UNF before drilling. Do not run this tap in reverse before fully withdrawing from the hole, as reverse rotation can damage formed threads.
