The OSG 1405005508 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile metals without cutting or producing chips. It uses a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS), the tap carries a TiCN coating for improved surface hardness and lubricity. At 2.375 inches overall length with a thread length of 0.4921 inches and a shank diameter of 0.194 inches, it is sized for machine tapping operations requiring a 10-24 UNC, Class 2B fit at an H6 thread limit. This tap is installed by machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance mechanics working with CNC machines or manual tapping equipment.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a wide range of ductile materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it particularly useful in applications where thread depth must be maximized in a shallow blind hole. It is used in production machining, toolroom fabrication, and maintenance repair operations where chip-free threading is required to avoid contamination in enclosed or precision assemblies.

Install in a rigid tapping chuck or floating tap holder sized for a 0.194-inch shank diameter. Power down or lock out the machine spindle before loading or removing the tap. Use a thread forming lubricant appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel or hardened steel. Verify pilot hole diameter against the recommended forming tap drill chart for 10-24 UNC before operation, as thread forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps.
