The OSG 1405005408 is a thread forming tap designed for 10-24 UNC right-hand threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, this forming tap displaces material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with a superior surface finish. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, it delivers extended tool life in demanding production environments. The H5 thread limit ensures close tolerance control, and the modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a tapping depth of 0.866 inches. This tap belongs to the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series and is suited for machinists and toolroom technicians working in precision threading operations.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is specifically intended for blind hole threading where chip evacuation is a concern and thread strength is critical. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it well suited for shallow blind holes where a standard plug chamfer would leave insufficient full threads at the bottom of the bore. Typical applications include CNC machining centers, manual tapping operations, and production threading in aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing environments.
Designed for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Suitable for blind hole threading operations requiring 10-24 UNC thread form with an H5 thread limit.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which differs from standard cut tap drill sizes - consult a forming tap drill chart before machining the pilot hole. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material before tapping. For CNC rigid tapping, verify spindle synchronization and use the correct tap holder to avoid tool breakage. Secure the workpiece completely before beginning the tapping operation.
