The OSG 1405004608 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile metals without cutting or producing chips. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), this tap is engineered for demanding production and maintenance threading applications. It carries an 8-32 UNC thread form with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, making it well-suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Class of fit is 2B with a thread limit of H5. Right-hand thread direction. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a tapping depth of 0.752 inches. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical tradespeople working with tapped assemblies will find this tap consistent with OEM-spec hardware standards.
This tap is applied to blind hole threading operations across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The thread forming method displaces material rather than cutting it, which produces stronger threads and eliminates chip-clearing concerns in blind holes. It is commonly used in precision sheet metal, HVAC component fabrication, structural brackets, and mechanical assembly work where thread integrity and repeatability are critical.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series (Series 14050). Suitable for any standard 8-32 UNC tapping application requiring a modified bottoming chamfer and chipless thread forming.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a standard cut tap drill size — consult a tap drill chart specific to thread forming for 8-32 UNC before drilling. Use a tapping lubricant or cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material, particularly for stainless steel and hardened steel. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is driven perpendicular to the hole axis to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. Follow applicable OSHA machine guarding and PPE requirements when operating tapping equipment.
