The OSG 1405004508 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Part of the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, this roll tap uses material displacement rather than cutting to produce strong, chip-free internal threads. It is sized for 8-32 UNC right-hand threads and features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of blind holes. The tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and carries a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating for improved wear resistance and tool life in demanding materials. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a shank diameter of 0.168 inches.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance threading operations in machine shops, manufacturing facilities, and industrial maintenance environments. It is intended for use in blind hole applications across a range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, die steel, and hardened steel. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is engineered for use in CNC tapping centers and rigid tapping setups where chip evacuation is a concern and thread strength is critical.
Designed for blind hole threading of 8-32 UNC right-hand threads in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N confirm suitability across these material groups.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a cutting tap drill size for the same thread - consult published roll tap drill charts for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Set spindle speed and feed rate per the tap manufacturer recommendations for the specific workpiece material. Use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the material being threaded. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and confirm the tapping head or CNC program is set for rigid tapping to avoid tap breakage.
