The OSG 1405004208 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in a blind hole configuration. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) with a TiCN coating, this bottoming-style tap produces 8-32 UNC threads with a right-hand direction and a class 2B fit to H5 thread limit. With 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads, it seats close to the bottom of a blind hole, maximizing usable thread depth. The cold-forming process displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads and no chip evacuation concerns. This tap is part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series, built for productive threading in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance machining environments where blind-hole threading of 8-32 UNC fastener locations is required. The bottoming chamfer makes it especially effective when full thread engagement close to the hole bottom is critical. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It is appropriate for use in both manual tapping operations and CNC machining centers where a controlled feed rate can be maintained. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in metal fabrication or repair will find this tap well-suited to their workflow.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series (Series 14050). Coolant-through is not supported on this model.
Thread forming taps require a specifically sized forming tap drill rather than a standard tap drill; consult OSG or a machining reference for the correct pre-drill diameter for 8-32 UNC cold-form tapping. Power down or lock out all machine motion before changing tooling in any CNC or drill press setup. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to protect the coating and extend tool life. This tap is intended for installation by qualified machinists or maintenance professionals familiar with threading operations.
