The OSG 1405003408 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-form threading in blind holes. Unlike cutting taps, this bottoming tap displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chip generation. It is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) for improved wear resistance and toughness over conventional HSS. The TiCN coating reduces friction and extends tool life in demanding applications. With an overall length of 2 inches and a 6-32 UNC thread form, it is suited for precision tapping operations in production and maintenance environments across metalworking trades.
This tap is built for blind hole threading in a wide range of materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The bottoming chamfer with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it a practical choice where thread depth is critical. It fits standard tapping applications in machine shops, manufacturing facilities, and field maintenance settings where a 6-32 UNC Class 2B fit is required.
Designed for use in materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Suitable for blind hole applications requiring a 6-32 UNC Class 2B thread form. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series 14050.
Thread forming taps require a correctly sized forming tap drill hole — consult OSG or standard thread forming drill charts for the proper pre-drill diameter for 6-32 UNC in the target material. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece fully and apply consistent, controlled torque to avoid tap breakage, particularly near the bottom of blind holes. Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or technician familiar with tapping operations and proper machine speeds for form tapping.
