The OSG 1405001008 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, this bottoming tap creates 2-56 UNC threads in blind holes with minimal chamfer lead - 1 to 1.5 threads - allowing threading close to the bottom of a bore. The H4 thread limit provides controlled tolerance for precision fastener applications. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die technicians use this tap where chip evacuation is a concern or where thread strength requirements favor a formed profile over a cut thread.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its right-hand thread direction and bottoming chamfer make it appropriate for CNC tapping centers, drill presses, and manual tapping operations where the tap must reach near the floor of a closed-bottom hole. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is optimized for materials that work-harden, where a forming action produces a stronger thread form than cutting alone.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 2-56 UNC internal threads. Material application codes P, M, and N apply.
Thread forming taps require the correct forming tap drill size - not the standard tap drill - to achieve the proper minor diameter before tapping; consult a forming tap drill chart for the 2-56 UNC size. Power down and secure the workpiece before initiating any tapping operation. Apply appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material to reduce torque and extend tap life. Installation is typically performed by machinists or tool-and-die technicians using a tapping attachment or CNC rigid tapping cycle.
