The OSG 1405000508 is a bottoming thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed to cold-form internal threads without cutting. Rather than removing material, it displaces metal to create stronger, chip-free threads in blind holes. Manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, this tap delivers extended tool life and reduced friction in demanding threading applications. It produces a 1-64 UNC thread form with a right-hand thread direction, a Class 2B fit, and an H3 thread limit. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general mechanical tradespeople use this tool when threading small-diameter blind holes in metal components.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it practical for tight-tolerance assemblies where thread engagement depth is critical. It fits standard tap handles and machine tapping chucks compatible with the 0.141-inch shank diameter.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P, M, and N confirm suitability across these workpiece categories. Compatible with standard tap handles and machine tapping equipment accepting a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than the drill size used for cutting taps of the same thread designation - consult the tap manufacturer drill chart before drilling. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured before tapping. Apply appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material to reduce galling, particularly in stainless steel and hardened steel. Reverse the tap periodically during hand tapping to relieve stress and maintain alignment in deep blind holes.
