The OSG 1400157908 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, it handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, die steel, hardened steel, and aluminum. The tap is configured in a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it suitable for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. It carries a H9 thread limit and cuts a 2-56 UNC right-hand thread at 56 threads per inch. Overall length is 1.75 inches with a thread length of 0.437 inches. Licensed machinists, toolmakers, and precision fabricators are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is engineered for blind hole threading applications in production and job-shop environments. The 2-56 UNC thread size is common in small fastener assemblies, instrument panels, and electronic enclosures where fine thread engagement is required in compact bosses. Material application codes P and N indicate suitability for steel and non-ferrous alloys. The HY-PRO NRT trade name identifies it within the OSG Series 14001 thread forming line, which is built around form-tapping rather than cut-tapping to produce stronger threads with better surface finish in ductile materials.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Part of the OSG Series 14001 HY-PRO NRT thread forming line.
Thread forming taps require a specific form-tap drill size — do not use standard cut-tap drill charts, as the correct hole diameter is larger to allow material displacement. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping attachment or CNC tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage at this small diameter. Apply a thread forming lubricant or cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material before tapping. Inspect the tap for galling or wear regularly, as work hardening in stainless steel and hardened steels accelerates tool degradation.
