The OSG 1400151401 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this plug-chamfer tap handles through-hole threading applications in demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, die steel, hardened steel, and aluminum. The H10 thread limit and 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads at the lead make it well-suited for controlled-tolerance threading where chip evacuation is a concern. Overall length is 3.813 inches with a shank diameter of 0.480 inches.
This tap is sized for 5/8-11 UNC right-hand threads and is intended for through-hole applications across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The thread forming process displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from the hole. It is a fit for production machining, maintenance shops, and toolroom use wherever a high-performance cobalt forming tap is required for 5/8-11 UNC threading in challenging stock.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P and N apply. Designed for through-hole threading operations requiring a 5/8-11 UNC right-hand thread form.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread — consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter before use. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material prior to tapping. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is driven in axial alignment with the drilled hole to avoid tap breakage or thread distortion. Always follow applicable shop safety practices when operating tapping equipment.
