The OSG 1400151101 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Sized for 5/8-11 UNC right-hand threads, it features a plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads for gradual thread engagement. Constructed from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, it handles demanding threading operations across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Overall length is 3.813 inches with a shank diameter of 0.480 inches and a thread limit of H7. Installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading applications in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The cold-forming process produces stronger threads than cut taps by work-hardening the material rather than removing it. With a tapping depth of 2.126 inches and a thread length of 1.091 inches, it fits standard production drilling and tapping setups on CNC and manual equipment. Coolant-through capability is not included in this model.
Designed for through-hole threading of 5/8-11 UNC right-hand threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require higher torque than cut taps and must be used with appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece and verify spindle alignment before tapping to prevent tap breakage. Always use the correct drill size for thread forming, which is larger than the drill size used for cut tapping the same thread. Follow shop safety procedures and machine manufacturer guidelines when setting tapping torque limits on CNC equipment.
