The OSG 1400150201 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming 5/8-11 UNC internal threads in blind holes. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with a superior surface finish. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel for increased heat and wear resistance, and carries a steam oxide coating to improve lubrication during the forming process. With an H7 thread limit, a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, and a right-hand thread direction, this tap suits demanding production and maintenance threading applications in metalworking environments.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations across a broad range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug chamfer while still providing enough lead-in for reliable thread formation. It is suited for use in CNC machining centers, manual drill presses, and tapping machines where controlled feed is available. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance mechanics working in industrial and fabrication settings are the primary users.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N indicate suitability for steel and non-ferrous materials respectively. Part of OSG Series 14001 HY-PRO NRT thread forming tap line.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — consult an H7-limit forming tap drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before tapping. Power down and secure the workpiece before setup. Use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material to prevent galling, particularly in stainless steel. Thread forming generates higher torque than cutting taps, so verify that the tapping machine or tap holder torque capacity is appropriate for 5/8-11 UNC forming operations.
