The OSG 1400143700 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-form threading in through-hole applications. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, it cuts a 1/2-13 UNC right-hand thread to a Class 3B fit with an H5 thread limit. The plug chamfer style features 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads, making it suited for through-hole work where the tap can pass fully through the material. Constructed from cobalt with a bright finish, this tap handles elevated heat and tool pressure without sacrificing edge integrity. Overall length is 3.375 inches with a tapping depth of 1.933 inches. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance mechanics use this tap in production and repair environments.
This tap is rated for use in a broad range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The thread forming method displaces material rather than cutting chips, which improves thread strength and eliminates chip evacuation concerns in blind or through-hole configurations. It is a strong fit for production shops, fabrication environments, and maintenance operations where consistent 1/2-13 UNC thread quality is required across multiple material types. No coolant-through capability is included, so external cutting fluid application is standard practice.
Designed for through-hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply per the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14001 classification.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap handle, tapping machine, or CNC machining center. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the pre-drilled hole diameter matches the recommended forming tap drill size for 1/2-13 UNC before tapping. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil to the tap before and during the operation. Because this is a forming tap, do not use it in brittle materials such as cast iron where chip-forming taps are required.
