The OSG 1400142701 is a thread forming tap designed for 1/2-13 UNC applications in blind hole threading operations. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, this tap uses a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, the 1400142701 is built for durability in demanding production environments. At 3.375 inches overall length with a 0.921-inch thread length and a shank diameter of 0.367 inches, it fits standard tapping chucks and holders used in CNC and manual tapping setups. Right-hand thread direction and H4 thread limit ensure consistent, on-tolerance threads across production runs.
This tap is suited for threading alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it the correct choice when full thread depth close to the floor of a blind hole is required. It is commonly used in machining, toolroom, and production environments where 1/2-13 UNC fastener threads are tapped directly into component blanks or assemblies. The cobalt substrate offers added heat resistance compared to standard M2 HSS, making it appropriate for harder or more abrasive materials at normal tapping speeds.
Designed for blind hole 1/2-13 UNC thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for these material groups.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom professional. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned with the drilled hole before engaging to prevent tap breakage or cross-threading. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before and during tapping. Follow standard shop safety procedures, including machine lockout when changing or inspecting taps.
