The OSG 1400141905 is a thread forming tap from the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-form threading in through-hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This plug chamfer tap is built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for increased surface hardness and wear resistance. It carries an H5 thread limit and cuts a 7/16-20 UNF right-hand thread. The overall length is 3.156 inches with a tapping depth of 1.713 inches, making it suited for moderate-depth through-hole work in production and maintenance machining environments.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading operations across a broad range of metallic workpiece materials. The cobalt construction and TiN coating make it a strong choice for tougher alloys that would accelerate wear on standard HSS taps. Typical applications include production line threading of fastener holes, component repair, and general machine shop work where chip-free thread forming is preferred over conventional tapping. It is not designed for blind-hole applications where displaced material has nowhere to flow.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces (material application codes P and N). Designed for through-hole threading only.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter, as the required hole size is larger than for a comparable cut tap. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material; dry tapping will accelerate wear and risk tap breakage. Ensure the tap is held perpendicular to the workpiece to maintain thread alignment. Secure workpieces fully before operation and follow standard machine shop safety practices for rotating tooling.
