The OSG 1400141000 is a cobalt thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for producing 7/16-20 UNF internal threads without cutting. Thread forming displaces material rather than removing chips, which results in stronger threads and eliminates chip-related tap breakage. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. At 3.156 inches overall length with a 0.323-inch shank diameter, this tap fits standard tap holders used by machinists and maintenance technicians working in production or field repair environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The H5 thread limit controls the tolerance of the finished thread, making it appropriate for close-tolerance UNF fastener applications in aerospace, automotive, and general industrial machining. It is installed by machinists and toolroom professionals using CNC machining centers, drill presses, or manual tapping equipment with appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces requiring 7/16-20 UNF threads. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from standard cut tap drill sizes — consult a thread forming drill chart before machining. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to reduce tool wear and improve thread quality. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping to prevent movement, and ensure the tap is held perpendicular to the drilled hole to avoid thread misalignment. Power down or de-energize any CNC spindle before manually inspecting tap engagement.
