The OSG 1400140100 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Unlike cut taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with improved surface finish. This tap is ground to an H5 thread limit and features a plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads for controlled thread entry. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, it handles demanding materials at elevated temperatures. The overall length is 3.156 inches, with a tapping depth of 1.713 inches and a shank diameter of 0.323 inches. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary installers.
This tap is configured for 7/16-14 UNC right-hand threads and is suited for through-hole threading applications. It performs across a broad range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The plug chamfer makes it appropriate for through-hole work where the tap can pass completely through the part. It is well suited for production machining, maintenance, and toolroom environments where thread strength and dimensional accuracy are critical.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups per ISO classification.
Thread forming taps require a specifically sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill — consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter before machining. Adequate lubrication or tapping fluid is essential, particularly in stainless and alloy steel, to reduce forming torque and prevent tap breakage. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the spindle axis before engagement. Follow all applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements when tapping operations are underway.
