The OSG 1400140000 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this plug-chamfer tap generates strong, work-hardened threads in a single pass. It is rated at the H4 thread limit and configured for right-hand, 7/16-14 UNC threads. With an overall length of 3.156 inches and a tapping depth of 1.713 inches, it is sized for standard through-hole threading operations on the benchtop or in a CNC tapping cycle. Machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople rely on this geometry for production threading in ductile metals.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads makes it a practical choice for through-hole entry where a starting lead is needed. It fits production environments in general machining, fabrication shops, and tool rooms where chip-free thread forming is preferred over cutting taps to improve thread strength and reduce tap breakage risk.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply. Suitable for use with standard 7/16-14 UNC tapping chucks, rigid tapping holders, and floating tap holders on manual and CNC equipment.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill size - consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart before drilling. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material before tapping. Ensure the spindle is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece to prevent thread distortion or tap breakage. On CNC equipment, use the machine's rigid tapping cycle with the correct feed-per-revolution programmed for 14 TPI.
