The OSG 1400136500 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Operating on the 3/8-16 UNC thread standard with a plug chamfer and H10 thread limit, this tap displaces material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with improved surface finish. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, it handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and die steel. The right-hand thread direction and through-hole application design make it a standard choice for machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in production environments.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials across a wide range of hardness levels. The cobalt construction provides heat resistance during high-speed tapping cycles, making it appropriate for CNC machining centers and manual tapping operations where tool life and thread quality are priorities. Material application codes P and N confirm compatibility with steel and non-ferrous material groups. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads makes it well-suited for starting in pre-drilled through holes.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
Installation is performed by machinists or tool-and-die technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle. Ensure the tap drill size for 3/8-16 UNC thread forming is correct before starting, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tool life. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping to prevent movement that can break the tap.
