The OSG 1400136005 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for through-hole threading in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is built from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating, giving it elevated heat resistance and extended tool life in demanding applications. The plug chamfer style - with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads - makes it suited for through-hole work where the tap can feed freely through the material. Class of fit is 3B with a thread limit of H5, producing consistent, close-tolerance threads. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary users.
This tap handles 3/8-16 UNC right-hand threads and is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The material application codes P and N confirm suitability across a broad range of structural and specialty steels as well as non-ferrous materials. At an overall length of 2.9380 inches and a tapping depth of 1.2520 inches, this tool fits standard tap holders and CNC rigid tapping setups. It is a solid choice for production environments where chip clearance is a concern and thread strength is critical.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Suitable for use with standard tap holders and rigid tapping attachments accepting the specified shank diameter of 0.3810 inches.
Installation should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with tapping procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is properly aligned before engaging the tap. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the material being tapped, even though no coolant-through feature is present. Inspect the tap for wear or damage before each use, as thread forming tools are subject to torsional stress and can fail without visible external signs of wear.
