The OSG 1400136000 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting or producing chips. Operating at 3/8-16 UNC with a plug chamfer and H5 thread limit, this tap displaces material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger threads and longer tap life compared to cut-tap alternatives. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, it handles demanding applications in alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, die steel, and hardened steel. Overall length is 2.9380 inches with a tapping depth of 1.2520 inches. Licensed machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance mechanics use this tap in production and job-shop environments.
The 1400136000 is suited for through-hole threading operations where chip-free forming is preferred. Its plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads provides a guided entry appropriate for through-holes in a range of workpiece materials coded P and N. Typical applications include threading bores in structural steel components, aluminum extrusions, stainless fabrications, and die steel tooling blocks. Right-hand thread direction matches standard fastener conventions. The H5 thread limit and Class 3B fit tolerance make it appropriate for close-tolerance assemblies requiring consistent thread form across high production volumes.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for these material groups. Part of OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14001.
Thread forming taps require tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material — dry tapping is not recommended. Use a tapping head or CNC rigid-tap cycle sized for 3/8-16 UNC to maintain axial alignment and avoid tap breakage. Ensure the through-hole is drilled to the correct forming-tap drill diameter, which differs from cut-tap drill charts — consult OSG forming-tap drill size recommendations for 3/8-16 UNC. Power down the machine and secure the workpiece before tap changes.
