The OSG 1400135708 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile and machinable metals without cutting. Unlike cut taps, this forming tap displaces material to produce stronger, work-hardened threads with no chips to clear. It carries a 3/8-16 UNC thread profile with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The cobalt substrate provides heat resistance for demanding materials, and the TiCN coating reduces friction and extends tool life. Overall length is 2.9380 inches with a tapping depth of 1.2520 inches.
This tap is built for blind hole threading applications across a broad range of workpiece materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It is suited for production machining environments, tool rooms, and maintenance shops where right-hand 3/8-16 UNC threads are required in tough or abrasive base materials. The thread limit is H11, accommodating the material displacement inherent to the forming process. This is a dry or coolant-fed hand or machine tap intended for use by machinists, tool and die makers, and skilled maintenance technicians.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply. Designed for blind hole threading operations requiring a 3/8-16 UNC thread form.
Thread forming taps require proper hole preparation with a forming-specific drill size larger than a cut tap drill — consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter before use. Apply appropriate tapping compound or cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material, even if the tap does not use coolant-through delivery. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping arm or CNC rigid tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage. Inspect the pre-drilled hole depth to confirm adequate clearance below the intended thread depth before tapping.
