The OSG 1400133700 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or removing material. The 5/16-24 UNF plug chamfer style makes it suited for through-hole threading applications where a full thread form is required near the entry point of the hole. Constructed from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this tap delivers increased heat and wear resistance compared to standard M2 HSS taps. The H3 thread limit keeps tolerances tight for consistent fit in production environments. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working in precision threading applications are the primary users.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel - covering a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The plug chamfer, with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads, allows gradual thread engagement and is best applied in through-hole situations where blind-hole bottoming is not required. The right-hand thread direction and standard UNF pitch make this a direct fit for common fastener applications in automotive, aerospace, and general machining environments.
Rated for threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups. Intended for through-hole threading applications only.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - consult a UNF forming tap drill chart for the correct hole diameter before use, as forming taps use a larger pilot hole than cutting taps. Apply a quality tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated tap handle or CNC rigid tapping cycle to maintain axial alignment. Coolant-through is not supported on this tap; flood or brush-applied lubricant is appropriate.
