The OSG 1400131801 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, it produces 5/16-18 UNC right-hand threads in a plug chamfer configuration with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and carries a steam oxide coating to reduce friction and improve lubrication retention during tapping. Overall length is 2.719 inches, with a thread length of 0.665 inches and a tapping depth of 1.126 inches. The H7 thread limit ensures accurate tolerance control for most standard threaded fastener applications. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in machine shop and production environments.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Rated material applications include alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The cold-forming action displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with better surface finish compared to cut taps. It is appropriate for both production runs and maintenance work wherever 5/16-18 UNC threads are required in ductile materials.
Designed for through-hole threading of 5/16-18 UNC threads in ductile workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P and N apply per the input data.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC tapping cycle. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is properly secured and the correct tap drill size for thread forming is used, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cut taps of the same thread size. Apply cutting or tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to protect the tap and improve thread quality. Do not use this tap in blind holes unless confirmed suitable for the application, as chip-free forming still requires adequate material ductility and proper hole depth.
