The OSG 1400126401 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in materials where chip-free threading is required. Unlike cutting taps, this tool displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from blind holes. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and die steel. The modified bottoming chamfer provides 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Thread limit is H6, suitable for close-tolerance work.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications in production and maintenance environments. The 1/4-20 UNC thread form is one of the most common fastener sizes in North American manufacturing and fabrication, making this tap a staple for machine shops, toolrooms, and field maintenance crews working on steel and aluminum assemblies. The right-hand thread direction and standard shank geometry are compatible with conventional tapping heads, CNC machine tool holders, and tap wrenches. It is installed by machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance professionals.

Thread forming taps require higher torque than cutting taps and must be used with a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned before engagement to avoid cross-threading or tap breakage. For CNC or machine tapping, verify spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and tap diameter. Always follow shop safety practices and consult material-specific tapping charts for recommended speeds.
