The OSG 1400120601 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming 10-32 UNF internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer — 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads — allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a shank diameter of 0.194 inches. This tap is specified at thread limit H6 and Class of Fit 2B, making it suitable for precision fastener applications in close-tolerance assemblies.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations on production or job-shop work across a wide range of materials. Its cold-forming action displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger thread forms and no chip evacuation concerns in blind holes. Typical applications include tapping threaded inserts, fastener holes, and precision component assemblies in alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and related materials coded P and N. Right-hand thread direction with 32 threads per inch matches standard 10-32 UNF fastener specifications used widely in instrumentation, electronics hardware, and light mechanical assemblies.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Produces right-hand 10-32 UNF threads to Class 2B fit. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require proper tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material — dry tapping will shorten tool life significantly. Use a calibrated tap wrench or CNC tapping cycle with controlled feed rate at 32 threads per inch to avoid overloading the tap in hard materials. Ensure the pilot hole diameter is sized correctly for a forming tap, which differs from a cutting tap pilot requirement. Power down and secure the workpiece before setup changes on any machine tool.
