The OSG 1400120100 is a bottoming-style thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming 10-32 UNF internal threads without cutting or removing material. Made from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this tap displaces material to produce strong, work-hardened threads in blind holes. It carries a H5 thread limit and a Class 2B fit, making it suitable for precision threaded fastener applications where consistent thread geometry is required. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.194-inch shank diameter, it fits standard tap holders used in manual and machine tapping setups. Right-hand thread direction, 32 threads per inch, and a 1 to 1.5 chamfered thread lead complete the specification profile.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in a wide range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The forming action rather than cutting action makes it particularly well suited for ductile and semi-ductile metals where chip-free threading is an advantage. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians will find this tap applicable in production, repair, and prototype work across aerospace, automotive, and general industrial environments.
Designed for blind hole thread forming applications in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tap holders accepting a 0.194-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require correct drill size selection for the forming process — use the recommended forming tap drill chart for 10-32 UNF rather than a standard cut tap drill chart, as the hole size differs. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the material being tapped. Use a calibrated torque-limiting tap driver or CNC rigid tapping cycle where available to prevent tap breakage. Inspect the tap for chipping or deformation before each use, particularly when working in hardened steel.
