The OSG 1400118901 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for 10-24 UNC blind hole threading applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread closer to the bottom of a blind hole. Made from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it is built for durability in demanding production environments. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.492 inches. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes in a range of materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it especially useful where full thread depth close to the hole bottom is required. It carries a Thread Limit of H10, indicating a tighter tolerance class appropriate for precision threading work in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Right-hand thread direction is standard. It fits typical CNC tapping cycles and manual tapping operations where coolant-through tooling is not required.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a standard cut tap drill size — consult the tap manufacturer drill size chart before drilling. Secure the workpiece and use a tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material. Always back the tap out fully before removing from the machine spindle to avoid galling the formed threads. This work is typically performed by machinists or maintenance technicians following applicable shop safety procedures.
