The OSG 1400118401 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or chip generation. It produces a 10-24 UNC right-hand thread using a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well suited for blind hole applications where thread depth control is critical. Constructed from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap offers improved lubricity and resistance to wear and galling. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.492 inches and a tapping depth of 0.866 inches. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die technicians install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in a range of metallic materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, which is a common requirement in precision machined components, fastener bosses, and structural assemblies across industrial, aerospace, and automotive applications. It carries a Thread Limit of H5, which defines the pitch diameter tolerance and ensures consistent fit with standard UNC fasteners across production runs.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply. Designed for blind hole threading applications requiring a 10-24 UNC thread form.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a standard cut tap drill size — consult a thread forming drill chart before setup. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is driven with a synchronized tapping head or CNC rigid tapping cycle to prevent thread distortion. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before starting. Power down and de-energize all machine drives before changing or inspecting tooling.
