The OSG 1400117200 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 8-36 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads with no chips to clear. Made from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this tap is built for production and job-shop use in materials that respond well to cold forming. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads makes it suitable for through-hole entry. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a tapping depth of 0.752 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and CNC operators are the primary users.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading in a range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It carries a Class 2B thread fit with an H5 thread limit, making it appropriate for standard UNF fastener assemblies in automotive, aerospace, and general manufacturing environments. The right-hand thread direction suits standard tapping cycles on CNC machining centers and manual drill presses equipped with tapping attachments.
Designed for through-hole threading of 8-36 UNF threads in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14001.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size to produce the correct minor diameter - consult an UNF thread forming tap drill chart before drilling the pilot hole, as the required drill diameter differs from that used with cutting taps. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate to the workpiece material before starting the tapping operation. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole to prevent tap breakage. Replace worn taps promptly; a dull thread forming tap generates excessive torque and risks workpiece damage or tap fracture.
