The OSG 1400115905 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile metals without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads suits through-hole threading applications where the tap enters from a clearance hole. The H10 thread limit controls the tolerance class of the finished thread. At 2.125 inches overall length and a 0.168-inch shank diameter, this tap is sized for standard machine tool chucks and tapping heads used in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading operations producing 8-32 UNC right-hand threads. It is well suited for machine shops, maintenance facilities, and manufacturing lines working with the listed ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The chipless forming action reduces the risk of chip packing in blind approaches and extends tool life compared to cut taps in suitable ductile materials. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary users in both CNC and manual tapping setups.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, series 14001. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread - consult forming tap drill charts for 8-32 UNC before drilling. Secure the workpiece and use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the material being tapped. Power down or disengage the spindle before loading or removing the tap from the chuck. Follow shop safety practices and applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements when operating tapping equipment.
