The OSG 1400115405 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it produces 8-32 UNC threads in a right-hand direction with a plug chamfer of 4 to 4.5 threads. The H5 thread limit and 2B class of fit make it suitable for precision threading applications in production environments. At 2.125 inches overall length with a 0.374-inch thread length, this tap is sized for compact fastener applications. Licensed machinists and toolroom operators typically deploy this tool in CNC tapping cycles and manual tapping operations alike.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading applications across a range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its cold-forming action displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger thread forms and extended tool life compared to cut taps. It is well-suited for high-volume production runs where thread quality and consistency are critical. The plug chamfer provides progressive thread engagement, making it appropriate for both through-holes and applications where starting torque must be managed carefully.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tap holders and tapping attachments accepting a 0.168-inch shank diameter. Material application codes P and N apply.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid requirements for the target workpiece material. Always use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to protect tool life and thread quality. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned with the drilled pilot hole before beginning the tapping cycle. Do not reverse the tap under power without confirming the tapping attachment or CNC program is configured for thread forming tools.
