The OSG 1400114601 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Sized at 8-32 UNC with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, it displaces material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles demanding materials and reduces friction during tapping operations. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a thread limit of H6. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary installers.
This tap is rated for blind hole threading applications across a range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows the tap to reach near the bottom of blind holes, making it well suited for close-tolerance assemblies in production machining, maintenance, and repair environments where thread depth and fit are critical. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for both ferrous and non-ferrous base metals.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Fits standard tap drivers and CNC tapping heads accepting a 0.168-inch shank diameter with a 0.131-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a cutting tap drill size — consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart for 8-32 UNC before drilling. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil to the tap and workpiece before use. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is driven in axial alignment to prevent tap breakage or thread distortion. Power down and lock out any machine tool before changing or inspecting taps per standard shop safety practice.
