The OSG 1400114401 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. It operates on a fluteless principle, displacing material rather than removing it, which produces stronger threads with no chips to evacuate. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it handles the heat and tool pressure typical of thread forming in tougher alloys. The tap carries a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, an H4 thread limit, and targets 8-32 UNC thread profiles. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a tapping depth of 0.752 inches. Licensed trades and machining professionals install this tap in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes where a standard taper or plug chamfer would leave unthreaded material. It is commonly used in job shops, maintenance repair operations, and production machining where chip-free threading and thread strength are priorities. Right-hand thread direction is standard. Material application codes P and N indicate suitability for steels and non-ferrous metals.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series 14001. Fits standard 0.168-inch shank tool holders and tap chucks sized for number 8 machine taps.
Thread forming taps require a precisely sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a cutting tap drill size — consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct hole diameter before tapping. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the workpiece material, as thread forming generates higher torque than cutting taps and lubrication is critical. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap enters the hole on-axis to avoid tap breakage. This tap does not produce chips, but the work area and tool should still be cleaned of metal dust after use.
