The OSG 1400114400 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this tap carries an 8-32 UNC thread profile and a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, allowing it to form threads close to the bottom of blind holes. The H4 thread limit ensures consistent tolerance control across production runs. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a shank diameter of 0.168 inches. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals specify this tap where chip-free threading is critical to bore cleanliness and thread strength.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in both manual and CNC tapping applications. The cobalt construction improves heat and wear resistance, making it a practical choice for harder or abrasive workpiece materials. Typical installation scenarios include production threading on machined components where thread roll-forming is preferred over cut-tapping for superior thread surface finish and minor diameter integrity.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces per material application codes P and N. Designed as a standard 8-32 UNC thread forming tap for blind hole applications in compatible ductile materials.
Thread forming taps require a correctly sized forming tap drill — use the recommended tap drill size for 8-32 UNC roll-form operations, which differs from standard cut-tap drill sizing. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned before engaging to prevent thread distortion or tap breakage. Apply appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material; even though coolant-through is not available on this tap, external lubrication is strongly recommended. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and manufacturer tapping speed guidelines for cobalt tooling.
