The OSG 1400111705 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for producing 6-32 UNC internal threads through a cold-forming process rather than cutting. Cold forming displaces material instead of removing chips, resulting in stronger thread geometry and reduced risk of tap breakage in blind or through-hole applications. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and carries a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for improved wear resistance and tool life. Overall length is 2 inches with a plug chamfer, making it suited for through-hole threading operations where the tap can feed freely through the workpiece.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading in a range of metallic materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It carries an H7 thread limit, appropriate for applications requiring a slightly looser tolerance fit to accommodate the spring-back typical in cold-forming operations. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and production drilling crews use this tap in machine tapping applications where chip control and thread strength are priorities. The right-hand thread direction and plug chamfer allow smooth entry and progressive thread engagement from the start of the hole.
Designed for through-hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 6-32 UNC thread form.
Thread forming taps require a specific drill size larger than that used for cut tapping - consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter before use. Proper lubrication or cutting fluid is essential when tapping stainless and alloy steels to prevent galling and premature tap wear. Ensure spindle speed and feed rate are set per the tap manufacturer recommendations for the workpiece material. Power down and secure the workpiece fully before beginning any tapping operation.
