The OSG 1400111508 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, this plug-chamfer tap generates 6-32 UNC right-hand threads to a Class 2B fit with a Thread Limit of H5. The 2-inch overall length and 4 to 4.5 chamfered thread lead make it well suited for through-hole threading operations in production and job-shop environments. It is installed by machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance trades using CNC machining centers, drill presses, or manual tapping machines.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading applications in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Rated material applications include alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The thread forming process displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish compared to cut-tap methods. It is a practical choice for production runs where chip evacuation is a concern or where thread strength is a priority.
Designed for through-hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 6-32 UNC internal thread. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series (Series 14001).
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size that is larger than that used for cut taps — consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Secure the workpiece and use a tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material. Apply consistent axial pressure and maintain proper tap alignment to avoid tap breakage, particularly in harder alloys. Always de-energize or lock out any powered equipment before performing manual tapping operations on a machine.
