Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and heat tolerance compared to standard HSS taps. It is configured with a plug chamfer featuring 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads, a thread limit of H3, and a class of fit of 3B. The overall length is 2 inches with a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Thread forming taps require a properly sized form-tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill — consult OSG or published NRT drill charts for the correct pilot hole diameter for 6-32 UNC form tapping. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and use a suitable tapping fluid rated for the workpiece material, particularly when working in stainless steel or hardened steel. A synchronous tapping cycle or floating tap holder is recommended on CNC equipment to prevent thread distortion. Inspect the tap for wear or coating degradation regularly, as premature failure in hardened materials can result in tap breakage and workpiece loss.
