The OSG 1400107708 is a thread forming tap designed for right-hand, blind-hole threading in a 5-40 UNC configuration. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap cold-forms internal threads without cutting, displacing material to produce a stronger thread form with no chips to clear from the hole. The modified bottoming chamfer spans 2 to 2.5 threads, allowing the tap to engage close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 1.938 inches with a thread limit of H3 and a Class of Fit of 3B. It is sold individually and intended for use by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in precision threading applications.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance threading operations across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — the pilot hole diameter must be larger than a standard cut tap drill to allow material displacement without overloading the tap. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material, especially when working with stainless steel or alloy steel. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated tap handle or CNC tapping cycle with synchronous feed to avoid breakage. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, as a damaged forming tap can seize in a blind hole.
